Eco-Friendly Hotel Amenities Options: What Can Be Discussed

Reduced-plastic, paper-based and refillable amenity options, and how to talk about them accurately.

Eco-friendly hotel amenity packaging options

Guests increasingly expect hotels to reduce waste, and procurement teams are under pressure to show progress. The difficulty is that "eco-friendly" means very little on its own. The sections below set out what can realistically be changed, and how to describe it without overstating.

Start by defining what you are reducing

Progress is easier to communicate when the target is specific. Common, measurable goals include:

  • Less single-use plastic per room per night
  • A higher share of packaging that is paper-based or recyclable
  • Fewer partially used bottles discarded
  • Smaller shipping volume through more compact packaging

Choosing one target keeps decisions consistent and gives the front desk and marketing something factual to say.

Packaging changes

  • Paper and kraft options — paper boxes, kraft pouches and paper-wrapped soap replace plastic film in many applications. Suitable for dry items; for wet or steamy environments, confirm the barrier properties first.
  • Recycled content — available in cartons and paper items. Check the actual percentage rather than relying on a generic claim.
  • Reduced material — thinner film, smaller cartons and removing unnecessary inner layers often achieves more than switching material, with no cost increase.
  • Water-based inks and uncoated board — help recyclability, and usually read as more natural to guests.

Product changes

  • Larger refillable bottles — fewer units, less plastic per guest night. This is normally the largest single reduction available.
  • Solid formats — bar shampoo and conditioner remove liquid packaging almost entirely, though guest acceptance varies by market and property type.
  • Reusable items — a durable slipper or pouch designed to be taken home and reused. Effective when the item is genuinely worth keeping.
  • Materials substitution — bamboo or paper-stem options for small accessories. Suitable where strength and hygiene requirements allow.

Operational changes

Much of the waste in an amenity program comes from replacement policy rather than from the items themselves. Switching from daily replacement to on-request replacement, or consolidating several small items into one set, changes the numbers more than any material swap.

Speaking about it accurately

Claims that cannot be substantiated create risk, particularly in markets with advertising or consumer-protection rules. Safer formulations:

  • "Reduced plastic packaging" — when you have genuinely reduced the material used.
  • "Paper-based packaging" — describing the material factually.
  • "Refillable bottle format" — describing the mechanism.

Avoid "100% eco-friendly", "fully biodegradable" and similar absolute statements unless you hold documentation for every component, including inks and adhesives.

What we can discuss on an order

For our amenity items we can review kraft and paper packaging, reduced-material options, larger refillable formats and material substitutions, and confirm what is practical for your specific product list and destination market.

See our eco-focused amenity options and packaging page, or send your sustainability target and we will propose what can be changed.
